Automated driving is making heavy-duty trucks more efficient and safer
According to a recent PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) study entitled “The era of digitalized trucking: transforming the logistics value chain”, the trucks of the future could be more eco-friendly and more economical as automation gradually progresses.
Bosch solutions are also contributing to this progress, and thus helping make long-haul commercial traffic more sustainable. “Networked and automated commercial vehicles are the future, and we want to make a major contribution to shaping it,” said Dr. Markus Hayn, member of the Bosch board of management, at the 66th IAA Commercial Vehicles, during his presentation of the VisionX concept. Using a 40-ton truck as an example, the concept describes how the truck of the future could look. It will comprise cutting-edge technology and a hybrid drive, and will be partially automated.
VisionX makes platooning possible, meaning that a truck lines up in a convoy the moment it drives on the highway. The trucks are connected to one another, and can thus synchronize their acceleration, braking, and steering behavior. Moreover, via the Bosch IoT cloud, they can share information with each other on routes, traffic, and detours in real time. This makes it possible to reduce down time to a minimum, and to provide early warning of hazards and roadblocks. This, in turn, enables steady driving and helps avoid sudden braking and subsequent acceleration. At the same time, platooning technology makes it possible for trucks to drive up closer to the vehicles ahead, and this reduces aerodynamic drag. In this way, fuel savings of up to 11 percent will be possible in the future. According to the Bosch VisionX concept study, powertrain electrification is also contributing to making trucking more efficient, as it significantly increases the resource efficiency of long-haul travel.

Automated driving: while children are ready for it, adults feel they need more information
Children would like the car of the future to be automated, flexible, and eco-friendly. Over the course of the #asmartercar campaign, Bosch asked six-year-olds how they imagined the driving of the future. The result: the next generation of drivers is hoping for automated driving. The children envisioned not only that vehicles would be able to reach their destinations completely independently, but also park without the driver’s assistance. This vision also reflected the needs of the children’s grandparents: thanks to new technology, people could be mobile regardless of their age. Sustainable drive systems were also very important for the drivers of tomorrow. Out of concern for the environment, the majority of the young respondents hoped that their cars would be electric.
In contrast, as a YouGov omnibus survey showed, adult drivers are somewhat more pragmatic. For them, it is important that vehicles are able to take over in specific traffic situations. Two-thirds of the features that most of the 2.000 respondents mentioned are largely already available today. These include, for instance, an intelligent predictive adaptive cruise control system that adjusts the car’s speed to the vehicles ahead, ensuring that a safe distance is maintained. In addition to this, adult drivers expected the vehicles of the future to park on their own (55 percent), and be able to predict traffic jams or detours (51 percent). There was one topic that adults and children agreed on: in dangerous driving situations, smart technology should contribute to more automation in the car and thus make driving safer for young and old (56 percent).
One group of drivers in particular – namely those older than 55 – were still skeptical of driverless vehicles. However, people in this group were also the most likely to admit that they didn’t know much about such cars (27 percent). Against this backdrop, Bosch aims to use the #asmartercar campaign to raise awareness about automated driving technologies and increase acceptance.

A community app that Bosch developed is making mobility more sustainable
With more than 12,000 new apartments, 5 million square meters of commercial space, and 3.5 hectares of parks and green spaces, the Shipyard Communities building project in San Francisco is very impressive. In 2015, the first families moved into their new homes in the former shipyard in the southeastern part of the city. At present, a new shopping and entertainment district is also being built – it will be home to many shops as well as a film and arts center. Despite a growing population, the new neighborhood will be a sustainability role model, in part thanks to technical innovations.
The Smart Community app, which Bosch helped develop, is at the heart of the new community. Users can access real-time information from their local community, for instance about where the shuttle bus is currently located, or with which local trains they can best reach their desired destinations. This encourages people to use public transit and thus contributes to reducing CO2 emissions.
At the same time, Bosch and its partners are also working on making sure that app users can drive their own vehicles more comfortably and efficiently. A connected parking guidance system aims to help drivers find the closest available parking spots. In the future, smart vehicles may even be able to park on their own. As a result, they will need less space and help make available parking spaces even more efficient.
The connected community in San Francisco is the first of many. With its own IoT cloud, Bosch intends to provide other cities with a platform that will help them exploit the opportunities that smart communities offer.

Bosch is pushing the transition to e-mobility forward
The preliminary figures that were recently published showed that the Bosch Group’s innovation strategy is paying off. In 2014, the company’s sales increased 6.2 percent to 48.9 billion euros, and this despite a challenging market environment. Especially at Bosch Mobility Solutions (formerly known as Automotive Technology), Bosch recorded significant growth.
“We see ourselves as a provider of solutions for the mobility of the future, which will be automated, connected, and electric,” says Dr. Volkmar Denner, chairman of the Bosch board of management. Not only does the company develop energy-efficient automotive components for diesel, gasoline, and electric vehicles, it also offers software solutions and technologies that aim to increase the use of low-carbon mobility solutions. For instance, Bosch Software Innovations has developed an app that makes it easier to book and pay for charging stations across Germany. In the past, users needed a customer card for each individual provider. Thanks to Bosch, the entire offer is now available via a single app.
Moreover, with Stuttgart Service, Bosch is now involved in a project that aims to promote eco-friendly traffic concepts and make the transition to e-mobility in Stuttgart much more attractive. The concept allows users to combine the most suitable modes of transport for their selected routes. Via an online platform, public transport services are networked with car and bike sharing providers. Electric charging stations are also included in the mix. In the future, the platform will be able to process some 400,000 requests per day.
Twenty-three partners are cooperating on the project, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics as part of the “Electromobility showcase” project. The intermodal information and booking platform was designed by Bosch Software Innovations.
